Noone doubts she reads. The wonder is why portray yourself to be paper thin? Hell, she could have spun her usual hometown homily and rattled off the Mat-Su Frontiersman and the ADN.

Interlake says “Mocked is clearly the word that most Americans would have when watching either Charlie Gibson or Katie Couric interviewing Sarah Palin.” Katie mocked her? By feeding her clues about privacy re: Roe v. Wade? By asking her, “Yes, but can you think of any?” What are those but second and third chances at self-rescue?

Palin’s got something, but it’s not a thing that would garner respect from a Putin or Qaddafi or, frankly, an Angela Merkel. She jumped the gun, threw her daughter under the wheels of Mom’s ambition. Had she said “no,” run for Stevens seat and got some heavier political savvy and depth, she likely could have been 2012 or 2016 material and a steamroller at that. As it stands, she’s real close to becoming a big sidebar in the story of the GOP’s walk into the wilderness.
